How Does Ghostcat Malware Appeared?

Three months ago, ghost began its haunting when a user visits a particular website and then he served a malicious advertisement. After this, Ghostcat malware appeared in the browser where this malware starts fingerprinting the browser. It then started collecting device information for the purpose of identification and collected this information to check whether the ad is running on a genuine webpage or not. The specific targets of this campaign are the ad runners whose advertisements are running on one of the over 1000 online publishers’ pages. If such conditions met then Ghostcat inject a malicious URL linked to the ad and it is enough to destroy all the smart work here. The main purpose of Ghostcat attackers is to trick the publishers’ ad blockers so that publishers could not detect malicious content. The created code tries to check some other necessary additional conditions to attack. These conditions ensure attackers that if Ghostcat is running on the mobile-specific browser or not. A targeted country’s device is most important for attackers to know how it is running on a genuine website as opposed to a testing environment. After the confirmation of meeting this malware’s conditions, a fraudulent pop-up appears and lead the user to malicious content.
